Aeroembolism in left atrium during catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in a patient with dextrocardia: a case report and review of the literature
BACKGROUND Air embolus penetrating into heart chamber as a complication during percutaneous radiofrequency catheter ablation has been infrequently reported. CASE PRESENTATION A 55-year-old man with dextrocardia who suffered from abdominal pain was suspected to have multiple arterial thromboembolisms, which might have originated from left atrium thrombosis since he had atrial fibrillation. He ...
متن کاملImages in cardiovascular medicine. Esophageal diverticulum illustrated by barium swallow during left atrial catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation.
Left atrial radiofrequency catheter ablation guided by a 3-dimensional electroanatomic mapping system (CARTO, Biosense-Webster, Diamond Bar, Calif) was performed in a 67-year-old woman with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. To avoid delivery of radiofrequency energy near the esophagus, the patient was asked to swallow 5 cm of barium paste (E-Z-EM, Lake Success, NY) before conscious sedation, as d...
متن کاملInteratrial electrical dissociation after catheter-based ablation for atrial fibrillation and flutter.
A 58-year-old man with hypertension and diabetes with recurrent persistent symptomatic atrial fibrillation resistant to sotalol-facilitated cardioversions was referred for ablation. Catheter-based radiofrequency ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation was performed, which consisted of isolation of all 4 pulmonic veins; linear ablations along the left atrial roof; an ablation line from the l...
متن کاملCatheter ablation of atrial fibrillation without fluoroscopy using intracardiac echocardiography and electroanatomic mapping.
BACKGROUND Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation is currently guided by x-ray fluoroscopy. The associated radiation risk to patients and medical staff may be significant. We report an atrial fibrillation ablation technique using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) and electroanatomic mapping without fluoroscopy. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-one patients with atrial fibrillation (age, 42 to 7...
متن کاملCatheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using a 3D mapping system.
BACKGROUND We treated paroxysmal recurrent atrial fibrillation (AF) with radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation by creating long linear lesions in the atria. To achieve line continuity, a 3D electroanatomic nonfluoroscopic mapping system was used. METHODS AND RESULTS In 27 patients with recurrent AF, a catheter incorporating a passive magnetic field sensor was navigated in both atria to constr...
